Default Dedicated Sports Shooters Facebook Group

    Hi All,

We have created 2 Facebook groups relating to 2 dedicated groups, one for Sports and one for Hunters.

Here is a link to the Dedicated Sports Shooters Group on Facebook, here - https://www.facebook.com/groups/dedi...portsshooters/

The idea behind this group is to get as many Dedicated Sports Shooters together and to use this to keep guys updated with whats going on. We are lucky on GunSite to have an active community and because of this, we are mostly up-to-date with everything that is happening in the industry, but we know we are mostly the more active guys. There are lots of people who may not keep up with whats happening and we think everyone should know what is going on, especially when it's relating to specific groups.

This group will encompass all forms of sports shooting, from Clays and SAPSA, Pins to NSA and Silhouette to Bisley - Everyone!

To be clear, we feel that every firearm owner should be in the know, but there are certain things that are only relevant to certain groups and we want to help communicate this.

We are not saying that associations and clubs don't keep their members updated, but we are sure that not everybody gets the message. If we can help deliver that message, we will. It would also be good to share updates and keep all connected parties up-to-date.

Words uttered by certain ministers recently is a good example of rumblings that may well be happing in the industry. Keeping guys informed is important.

How can you help? You can join the group and add any of your friends who you know are dedicated hunters to the group.

Like minded people generally get on well, so it should be a happy place.

    Thanks Craig,

This is also important in order to spread the message from a PR point of view, of just how big sport shooting is in South Africa, and to give much needed recognition of their achievements to our fellow sport shooters.

We also need to get the message of South African sport shooting achievements (we have a rich history of this, dating back to past centuries) across to a wider audience, apart from those already involved.

I know that some of our members here on GS are quite literate with this type of thing. Maybe someone can even create a Wikipedia page on this as well, listing achievements of individual sport shooters and South African teams Nationally (National Colours), on the Continent (African Cups for instance) and Internationally (Olympics and World Champions), in the past and now.

So, to the "cyberpuppies" and the "pcfanatics" of our tribe, get going guys and girls!

This is what I was talking about when I said your time is worth even more than your money. If someone hasn't beaten me to it I'll figure out the Wikipedia entry.

    Great!

Here's something that may be relevant:

Note the years that SA was absent due to the Apartheid policy.

We have a lot of catching up to do!

Shooting sports in SA not even mentioned on this page:

Maybe we can also use this thread as some sort of notepad for purposes of the Facebook and Wikipedia pages / resource?

Good ideas here guys. I've registered shootingsports.co.za and think we can also collate all the info into a site of our own as a point of reference.

I've not thought much about what this will look like yet, but a section for each discipline shouldn't be too difficult. With input from everyone involved, it should be fairly easy to keep it relevant and up to date.

Thanks Craig, I watched a program on TV recently where Dawie Roodt interviewed Derick Hougaard on the progress with the SA Sports Hall of Fame initiative. Apparently they have secured a very large venue at Sun City (Sun International sponsoring). http://www.news101.co.za/auto/subaru...orting-greats/

I surely hope that the shooting sports and the champions thereof will be honoured there, especially in the light of the fact that it seems to be SA's oldest organized sport. Perhaps someone can connect the Sport Shooter Facebook page with the Sports Hall of Fame Facebook page, or something like that. There are without a doubt more talented people on here with this than what I am. http://halloffame.co.za/gallery/

Thing is, as members of the sport shooting and hunting fraternity, we are perhaps characterized to be known (or rather actually unknown) by having fun and minding our own business, and to be at peace with ourselves and the world, doing just that. But on the other hand, in a world where public opinion counts for a great deal (https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communis_opinio) and / or boni mores (http://www.oxfordreference.com/view/...95369380-e-305), and with the influence IT incl. social media has brought about, we have actually been very slow to catch up.

So yes, I think that we were actually always a very welcoming bunch of people. I can attest to that to the time when I formally started IPSC shooting. It was not long before some of the shooters, including former world no 1-10's, took me under their wing and started to teach me a couple of tricks. I don't know much about other sports at this level, but this is something special. This initiative will do well to grow the shooting sports in SA even further, in line with the trend in recent years.
