    Default Help choosing....

    Morning all...

Need to invest in a air rifle which will be predominantly used for Pest Control, culling of birds and rodents.

I think ill go with .177, but would like opinions and advice as to whether I should rather go .22.

I hunt with a 30-06, so am leaving more to the .22 which I can then use for small "fur/feather" hunting as well.

    CO2...? PCP? Break barrel....?

I like the idea or CO2... Pros / Cons?
    Cost efficiency vs Pcp?

    Accuracy, grouping?

    Help?!?!!

    Budget R5k.

I used to have one and sold it. I would say go with a proper pcp if you don't want a springer. It's a lot lower powered than a PCP (but considerably quieter). You won't need all the extra kit (scuba tank or pump, refill hose etc), but the CO2 runs out quick. Mine could use both the 88gr CO2 or the 10gr bulbs. The 88gr is expensive and quite hard to find. You won't get a lot of shots from the 10gr. I was in to air rifles for quite a while and had high end PCPs CO2s and Springers. I sold all of them a while ago. If I were to buy again (which I'm seriously contemplating now my son is getting old enough), I'd buy a standard springer. Much less to go wrong and all you need is a tin of pellets.

Id go Weihrauch. Never ever had any issues with them.
Build quality is exceptional. And they will last you a life time.
Made in Germany. No need to say anything further.
97k if you want power and super accuracy in a Springer.
Has under arm lever so barrel stays true.

Want to spend a bit less. The smaller break necks will do the job.
Have taken plenty bush doves with a the HW30s.

I own 177pcp. Does the job. But also have a 22. I just love the size of the 22 pellets.
    But 177 shoots more flat.

I'm far too lazy for CO2 guns. I'd either buy a springer or just get a .22lr.

    That a break barrel rifle?

Would I be able to shoot spring-hair, pheasants etc with it aswell...?

The general "pest" culling I know I could do with any "pellet gun"... But want something more ..

Yes, it is a springer / break barrel

I am not into hunting with such small calibres, so cant comment, but it is rated at +- 8oo fps.

WEIHRAUCH HW50S - The best bang for the bucks spring powered air rifle. Like the one airgun collector said: "I have over 40 top class rifles, but if I had to choose only one, it would be the HW50S." It offers everything... quality, accuracy, durability, fine craftmanship, brilliant Rekord trigger, enough power and above all, it is small and light enough for the whole family to enjoy. This is the best 'value for money' rifle available in South Africa. It offer everything you'll find in rifles that cost double the price.
Available models and prices: (scope not included in the price)
    WEIHRAUCH HW50S, Spring, 4.5mm, +- 800ft/s, R 5 100

Nope the HW50 is not really good enough for rabbit. Hitting dove in the chest do not let them drop every time.
The law recommends 35gr bullets for rats to rock hyrax and feathered game.

    Sounds logic,

But like I said, I am not a fan of hunting with small calibres like this, a mynah maybe at 10m's, but anything bigger and/or longer distance, nope, not good for the animals. Just my personal view
