Default Interesting 22LR balistics gel performance

I must say I didn't quite expect that.

What failed, the fact that it did not expand? The rounds did not reach 12'' fired in the rifle, but it did reach 12'' easily enough through the pistol, so it will punch a hole in vital organs, albeit a very small hole

I once read in a very old Magnum magazine. Where they talked about rifle barrel lengths.
Where they explained the powder burns behind the bullet keeping up pressure as it runs forward through barrel until it exits.
Optimum is to burn the last bit just as it leaves.

If the powder finishes its burn lets say 3/4 down the barrel. The last 1/4 the bullet is not pushed faster and starts dragging on barrel.
    And loosing speed.

So im thinking if a round loaded for pistol which needs powder to burn fast in short barrel is shot in a long rifle barrel.
The powder will finish burning in less then half the barrel length. And round just slowing down the rest of the way.

There was an episode of American Guns where they had a similar experiment using a Tommy Gun. They found shortening the barrel increased the speed, for the above reason. Just not enough powder to keep accelerating the bullet, resulting in a drop in speed

I believe 16'' of barrel is optimum for .22LR speed. but I supose that depends on what round you shoot, subsonics, high velocity or hyper velocity.
But I will not cut my rifles barrel shorter just for a few FPE extra
