Re: Morakniv - my favorite knife
I collected my Morakniv Companion Heavy Duty today and I am stoked!!
Only thing is that it is my first carbon steel knife as I always always said that I wont ever get a carbon steel knife.
Do I need to oil it if I keep it in my hunting gear bag until I use it one day or will it last if not oiled and not used for a long time in it's sheath?
Sounds stupid but that me for you.I guess I am a pickler. Pathetic at times I tell you!
What do's and dont's are there with carbon steel knives?
If I was able to paste the damn pics I would have done so by now.
Who has the Companion HD,Bushcraft and the Outdoor 2000 or any of the three and how are the three compared to each other in terms of overall grip comfort and quality.
My only little gripe is that the Companion and Companion Heavy Duty knives are a little short in the blade opposed to the longer knives of MORAKNIV like the Bushcraft .
Your thoughts please.

Re: Morakniv - my favorite knife
Made some mods to my companion today.
Filed the spine to make it 90 degrees and able to throw a spark, added a fire lighter, some paracord and some added retention for the blade. Chuffed now.

That's pretty cool, Luke. Off topic, you don't know a Mike with a similar surname as yours? Helped him with a firearms charge years ago.
Ricochet, I'm not sure. I think it could rust in the sheath due to humidity of it's not oiled. If you're afraid of rust I've read that a forced patina assists with corrosion resistance, or a high polish also helps.
Me, I'm just going to see how it goes with the carbon steel.Sent electronically, thus not signed.

LukeS, you may want to slip a couple of pieces of bicycle inner tube over the paracord. It makes a great fire starter if sliced thinly . Ignites easily with the ferro rod.

Ricochet, you are going to have to oil it or coat it with some sort of rust inhibitor.
If you want to put a patina on it you can use warm vinegar or mustard and if you have access to it ferric chloride.
Just remember to neutralise the acid and oil the blade afterwards.

Re: Morakniv - my favorite knife
Guys I would not panic about covering the blade with oil, my Mora has been absolutely beaten and then just shoved back into the sheath until later. Still looks great, in fact using it with my ferro rod has caused more "disfigurement" to the blade than lack of oil.
I also have several other high carbo steel blades from Neels VD Berg, who swears by Q20 or beef fat to keep them looking sexy. So far it works a treat.
Onto the Mora, got myself a little something sexy from fellow forum member today, a true gentleman, Erebus.
Just need to go buy some more ferro rods now ;)
Stay Bladed.
