Hijacker shot dead at mall
news/crime-courts / 25 January 2016 at 18:22pm
By: Genevieve SerraCape Town - A would-be hijacker met his match this weekend when he was shot and killed by a member of the public.
Witnesses say Liberty Promenade in Beacon Valley, Mitchells Plain, resembled a movie scene on Saturday night, as a dramatic shootout between a would-be robber and an unknown man took place.
It’s believed the armed suspect was trying to hijack the driver of an Opel Corsa bakkie.
But his plans were foiled by a passerby, who drew his own gun and shot the suspect in the head.
The incident took place in the parking lot outside McDonald’s at about 8.30pm.
The suspect died at the scene.
The passerby was not injured, said Major General Greg Goss, who heads both Mitchells Plain and Lentegeur police stations.
“This person tried to steal a Corsa Bakkie from a gentleman and threw the person out of the vehicle,” explained Goss.
“A member of the public, who saw what was going on, shot the robber in the head.
“The robber was also armed with a fully loaded firearm and had fired shots at this third person.
“This member of the public managed to shoot the robber and he retrieved the 9mm firearm from him.
“He also retrieved the bakkie and saved the driver.”
Goss did not want to reveal the identity of the rescuer.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said a case of murder has been opened and no arrests have been made.

Glad the rescuer and the rescuee are both ok.
I might just do the same because someone has always been there for me and mine when we needed it.
