Fallow deer Stags in Eastern Cape?
Good day Gents
I would like to find a spot to get a nice Fallow Deer stag this year.
Please Share your hunting spots in and around the Eastern Cape for Stags.
Thank you

Tip: Shoot them EARLY in the season, preferably even before the season starts (get permission from farm owner). The longer into the season they go, the worse the meat gets.

Re: Fallow deer Stags in Eastern Cape?
only the stags meat gets tough when they are rutting .. first week or two of april of April. they dont eat anything.; they just drink water and chase tail. the last stag i shot during the rut had a completely empty stomach. the meat was not too bad. after the rut they recover and get fat again. here in the eastern cape where the dry months are not as bad as up there.

Have a look at Belvedere Safaris. i got a male from them yesterday to say they are taking bookings for early Rut hunts. Don't know what their pricing is like.

Would it be fair to say then, the " best " time to hunt them would be around early to mid March or so ? Or rather wait until they fat again post rut ?

Re: Fallow deer Stags in Eastern Cape?
if you can time it right and klap a stag a week before the rut. you will have a sheep with horns. fat fat fat. best meat you will shoot . another problem with the rut is, when you shoot them deep in the rut, their skin is F@#ed up. they piss and shit in one spot and roll in it to get their stink on. you sometimes find these spots high in the mountains when walking.. you can smell it from far away.
so when you do shoot one covered in its own shit and piss. spray it down with a wap and wash him. before you start to slaughter.

Not to hijack your thread Daneel, but if there are anybody with a pair of Fallow deer antlers available and not in use , I really am in need to use some antlers on a Bowie knife I am making...would trade or pay for it...
