Default .303 vs .308 for bushveld huntin

what do you guys think?the .303 is more than acurate enough for the bushveld and the 10round capacity makes it beter for pigs and farm defence for that mater. Plus jou can get 215gr in the 303 vs 180 in the 308. The 308 has a very very small velocity advantage, but this is actualy a disadvantege for close range hunting

The 303 is closer to the 308 than most people realise.

the 303 is a robust and tough rifle - perfect for ...farm defense

Hell it has fought in more wars than even the M16 ........
the 303 has killed more people than any other single caliber (maybe the AK47 is now a contender)

I have one ... love it

    BTW GS Custom has a 303 round .. 140g at @ 2,850 .. a real stunning zinger

i agree.the 303 is very under rated. The reason for this was the use of milatery ammo on game, never a good idea. The other thing is the barel and the action. The no.4 and no.1 action is not very riged and this does not help acuracy but if seen sub moa groups out of handloads. But then the barel was in great shape. Most 303s barels are shot out due to the old cordite rounds. I have come acros a 303 thats barel is fine, wil make a gr8 sporter. Long live the 303

With modern powders, 303 and 308 samething in performance.
The look of the 303 is normally the determining factor plus the weaker way the bolt locks on the 303(Lee Enfield)

Double Tap: off the top of my head I'd say that the 7.62x39 has definitely killed more people that the .303 - more than willing to be proven wrong though.

On topic: if its bushveld hunting for meat / biltong purposes you refer to then the 303's lower velocity will result in less indirect damage to tissue. Woodleigh used to make some very decent rounds that would launch at around 2000fps, ideal for close range.

I think it's a misquote that use to read:

More animals have been killed in Africa by .303's than any other calibre

I own several Enfield .303's, my very favorite being a 1945 Fazakerley MK V Jungle Carbine I have had for years. I also own a couple of thousand rounds of Greek FMJ surplus...some of the best .303 ammo military ammo ever made...non corrosive and boxer primed. The Enfield is the fastest bolt action going and with strippers can be a very serious fighting rifle, even today. I have never hunted with any of mine but I would feel confident at closer ranges with SP ammo on anything deer size or maybe a bit larger. Back when I had eyes I could keep a bowling pin (US style) hung on a string jumping at 150yd from kneeling with my MK V and irons.
