Ah, you have those carnivorous rats! Mine were strictly vegetarian.

Re: Owl friendly rat poison?
Our ex Congo - Ex Rhodesian neighbor 40 yrs ago also told us as kids that back in the day 30/40ties the native folk would drink to pass out on various "blind you rotgut home brews" and occasionally they would have their feet gnawed badly. He said that the thick skin soles of the barefoot life style + alcohol induced anesthesia allowed the rats to do some ugly damage to the passed out one.
Old uncle De Bruin and Unca Bennie had tales ranging from witch craft to children stolen by hyena. His brother died by shot gun anti theft trap tied to car pedal (he forgot while drunk) and the child that got killed by army ants etc atc. But the rats eating passed out workers soles off feet was often told as the old man got older.

Re: Owl friendly rat poison?
Skokojaan is the answer. Homebrew (Mtombomela / sorghum) as a base, then juiced up with peri-peri, sugar, petrol, battery acid etc and left to stand a day or two. My father told us that the workers sometimes turned up with their mouths burnt white around the edges from the acid. On the question why they did that despite knowing that it does damage the answer was always the same: "Dan skop hy lekker, my baas" (It adds serious kick to it, my chief).
