416 Ruger alaskan load assiatance
I have been working on my 416 Ruger reloads and would like to get relatively close to the manufacturer specifications for the Hornady 400gr DGX/S rounds which provide a chrony velocity of around 2400m/s out of a 24" barrel. Based on online resources, which are appear minimal for the Ruger 416 from what I can find, it difficult to get reliable max load details with S355. I have a Ruger Hawkeye Alaskan with 20" barrel and am looking to achieve a velocity around about 2300m/s (2400m/s if possible from a 20" barrel, which I achieve with chrony factory rounds by not my reloads). My load speck are as follows:
I have not loaded above 76gr as this is already above the max loads I have been given by two reliable sources thus I am hesitant to push the load further. But even with these loads I seem to be underthe expected velocity. Based on my the chrony data it would suggest that about 79gr should get me to around 2300m/s assuming a linear increase in velocity andpressure which I assume is not the actual case. I am thus very hesitant to keep working the load up without more advise from those who are familiar with this specific rifle. For those who have the Ruger Alaskan 416 please could you kindly share your load data and chrony velocities you are obtaining using monoliths and jacketed bullets in the 400gr range.S355 011 /15 EXP 05 25 Dev-1.3% Primer Remington Bullet 400Gr Hornady GDX gr Ave m/s 69 1880 70 1963 71 1966 72 2040 73 2052 74 2080 75 2133 76 2173

Quick Load points to a speed of 2240fps at muzzle (2225fps at chrony at 5m from muzzle). Pressure 56K psi at this speed. 77,5gr looks as though it will get you closer. Dont exceed 2300fps as that is close to max pressure.

Yes I have done 400gr Dgs also. I did not find any difference from what I remember. I will post info when I can. I am also working on loads for the Peregrine 340gr solids and expanding bullets. What is interesting is the factory rounds came in at 2450 f/s which is the velocity for 24“ barrel. I was anticipateing about 2240 f/s.
