Give us 3 shooting tips for competition
I was thinking that it would be neat for the competitive shooters here (IDPA/IPSC) to each give three tips on gunhandling, ettiquette or on approaching a course of fire. It does'nt matter how basic it seems. It's always nice to revisit what makes a good shoot great! :)
I'll start:
1: Make up your time by moving quickly between targets
2: Bend your knees when shooting on the move
3: Make sure you are already prepared (enough ammo, etc) for the Stage/COF before it's your turn to shootBecause a thing seems difficult to you, do not think it impossible for anyone to accomplish - Marcus Aurelius

7. Know when to move on to the next target. No point in filling in a -1 (IDPA)
8. Follow Safety Officer's commands w.r.t. loading/unloading (I'm an SO and its piss anoying when someone think they can just unload, drop the hammer and holster before you even gave the command to do so).
9. Forget about the other shooters. Compete to the best of your ability and all will be fine.

10. Adjust your speed to the game and to the scenario. IDPA punishes misses more harshly than IPSC. Don't rush on hostage/hard cover shots, speed up on the close stuff,
11. Help patch and police brass,
12. Plan your stage properly. If, in IDPA, you are faced with an 11 round stage don't fill in unless you miss completely, or else you will be forced to reload.Cattle die, kindred die, every man is mortal:

When practicing:
16. Take it seriously, as though you would a match. (What you practice becomes a habit. What you practice, you take into a match, ie: Don't practice bad habits.)
17. Practice walking through a stage. This is where you learn techniques to read a stage.
18. Keep a log of your practice times and do the same exercises over and over and compare your times to the previous runs.

19. Go 100% of your ability in practice, 90% in a match,
20. Make every shot in practice count, don't just blast away,
21. Repeat the fundamentals every session.Cattle die, kindred die, every man is mortal:

22 Make sure you understand the COF if not do not be afraid to ask. 23 we dont always get to spend enough time on the range so spend a lot of time on dry fire. 24 if you reload make sure you are loading quality ammo dodgy ammo can ruin a good days shooting

25: If you're wearing a cap, take it off if there's prone shooting! :)
26: Don't wear dark glasses on a night shoot! ;D
27: Make sure extra mags are actually in your pouch! :PBecause a thing seems difficult to you, do not think it impossible for anyone to accomplish - Marcus Aurelius

Re: Give us 3 shooting tips for competition
Once you've mastered the basics of shooting as per my fellow shooters read the book below:
Practical Shooting, Beyond Fundamentals
Brian Enos's Practical Shooting, Beyond Fundamentals - often considered the competitive shooters bible - includes in-depth coverage of the technical and mental aspects of training and competition, and will provide new concepts as you continue to improve.
Eight chapters, 202 pages, softbound
