Thoughts on the Kershaw Brawler?

My question is exactly what the title reads.

For a EDC under R800, how is the Kershaw Brawler?

The Kershaw website gives the following stats:

• Steel: 8Cr13MoV, black oxide coating
• Blade length: 3 in. (7.6 cm)

Additional info:

• modified tanto blade
• slim profile

The steel is good for EDC purposes but requires regular sharpening if you need it to stay really sharp.

The blade length is good enough - in my opinion - for EDC purposes but slightly too small for large tasks

The tanto shape does not sharpen easily, although it looks nice.

The slim shape should wear easily in your pants pocket.

I was very interested in buying a Brawler myself as an EDC blade, but I opted for the Scrambler instead. Tanto blades are just a pain to keep sharp, and the Scrambler gave me a bit longer blade with a titanium nitride coating, which doesn't flake and chip off like the black oxide does.

In that case the question should actually be: What is the best/top 3 EDC knives under R1000.

The more important question is what you want to do with your EDC knife? I am not trying to be funny - it makes a huge difference!

Think along the lines of: work in an office and need to cut a piece of biltong every three months - get yourself a small, single bladed Victorinox folder.

Or work on a farm and need something to be abused severely on a daily basis - get an Okapi, or Enlan, or something cheap which you throw away every six weeks once it is worked beyond repair.

Or need a companion because you just don't know when or how you might need to defend yourself, but you also need to cut a steak over weekends and split cardboard boxes at the office - get a Byrd Cara Cara 2.

Other things to keep in mind are the shapes of the handle and blade for your purposes, as well as your own preferences.

If you want to buy once and cry once, get a Spyderco Endura or Delica.

I fully agree with this - An Endura or Delica are great EDC knives and are excellent quality, they can be used for a variety of tasks and are easy to carry due to the flatness of the knife. I would rather spend more money for a better knife which I know will give me service and reliability, instead of replacing knives often.

In my experience, a great EDC knife for very cheap is an Enlan EM-01. They sell for ± R300 and is a great little workhorse.

I've been looking at the Delica 4. Price point a little high for me though. Been reading good things about the Byrd Meadowlark. Very much the same knife I believe, but made under licence and at a lower price point.
