Default Tonteldoos building course step by step

    Good day to all members.
Here is another tutorial/DIY project my friend, Chris Moolman and I attended. As usual our mentor Heman Nel at Nylstroom assist and guide us to complete a Tontelsoos.

    It started with a drawing:

Chiseling out the drawing in a negative print, using a piece of clay to follow progress...

The difficult part is to understand the negative print you are chiseling from the solid piece of mild steel, using tool steel/high speed steel chisels.

Chiseling and figuring out what the negative print is looking like in the positive print...

Cutting a piece of copper sheet to form the Tonteldoos body..

Pressing the negative print onto the copper sheet:

    Clay printout-positive :

Positive lead print out from the press:

    Rolling/bending and seaming:

    Printed body completed:

Pressing out the lid from brass sheeting:

Cutting a wooden disk to press the "tontel/cotton upwards in the Tonteldoos...

Firing the forge to heat up the spring steel ring round bar:

Project completed, still need to attach the chain to the Tonteldoos lid...thank you for watching.....

Chris Moolman instructed /assisted Herman Nel how to handle oxen , specifically the finer points of how to "inspan " and make them obey commands to execute commands.

We do a 1880 era black powder hunt every year. One criteria is to keep it as original as possible. We use the Tonteldoos/tinder box to start a fire. If you follow the 1880 era black powder hunt , there are photos about the use of a tinder box.

Ta will head over there again. Been a while since I last checked it. I've made linen tinder before. It isn't easy.
