You shoot it, you eat it! Weird things on the menu?
You shoot it , you eat it!
This is what I have taught my kids so that they don't go around shooting living things for sport without any intention of eating what they kill.
When I removed some European starlings from my roof the other day in front of them, I felt obliged to practice what I preach, so my mini chickens were skinned and gutted and landed up on the braai marinated with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. A bit tough but very tasty.
So my question is, how many of you teach your kids this principle, and have had to follow through?
What have you eaten and how did you cook it?

Group of us were having this discussion about a week ago after a chap culled some Rockies with a catty - and ate them. Someone called the limit at a bad guy. Agreement was unanimous not to eat a baddie if shot.

Yep, me, mine and ours. You shoot it = you eat it.
Cordite, some animals don't need that kind of respect.😊"Trespassers will be welcomed, and served a light lunch"

Re: You shoot it, you eat it! Weird things on the menu?
I taught my son that killing for the sake of killing is obviously not on and that what we kill we eat,not as a principle as such but because it is silly to waste good meat.
I also taught him that problem animals such as monkeys, lynx[rooikat],jackal, babboon ect.are exempt from the table.Porcupines can also cause problems but are darn nice eating.
I also made him understand that these animals may be a problem to one specific farmer or area and are also not to be shot for the hell of it but only if they are in actual fact causing problems.
We shoot quite a few jackal, but i love the sound of a jackal calling at night in a wild area.

Pretty much, except for designated pest/vermin/invasive species like possums, rats, stoats etc.
Although my youngster would be keen to give them a taste given half a chance...
