Re: RDS for hunting rifle
Messor
Thanks for the detailed explanation, your thoughts are exactly what i figured you would be up to.
Lets take the natural process of the angler....young,nail any fish that moves on whatever bait is available....little older, want more of a challenge so go to lighter line, then artificials, then fly rod and tying own flies ect.
The hunter goes through the same process with wanting more out of the sport.Open sights, handguns, bows all add a challenge when you get to this stage.
Your reasoning is spot on about the suitabillity of your 338 for the scenarios you have depicted BUT...you are looking at it with the idea of using the equipment that you have in a different role...much like an estuary angler making a change to artificial lures and using his old bait stick.Sooner or later he will get a dedicated outfit rigged out with braid line for this change of tactics.
What you are doing will work, sure, maybe even work well, but there will allways be a little niggle in the back of your mind about using a specialised tool for the job.Keep your 338 for those open vlaktes.
How does an RDS fitted 444 or 45-70 lever gun sound or even a Ruger no 1.
I can almost guarentee that you will migrate in this direction.

Re: RDS for hunting rifle
An RDS equipped 338WM should make an awesome rifle for fast-moving "targets" at moderate distances.
Mount the RDS as low as possible to "point" more naturally, almost like a shotgun.
If you use decent quality mounts, after a few mounting-dismounting cycles to wear down the burrs, the RDS and scope should reliably return to zero when swapping.
While an offset mounted RDS is a quick way to transition from scope and back, it will never "point" as naturally as a properly mounted sight in the right place.
A dedicated rifle for this purpose, like a 444 or 45-70 lever action, would be quite useable. If shooting cast bullets, it will be most affordable to shoot as well.

Re: RDS for hunting rifle
All in good time my friend, baby steps, first one being buy the RDS :)
I'll try exactly that, but since I cannot see the sight before buying I'll have to make sure I get the right one from the start, hence that is why I asked how good the docter RDS's are.

Re: RDS for hunting rifle
You've still got young eyes, have you considered an aperture rear sight with an optic fiber front sight? Aperture rear sights that fit in a weaver mount are available.
