Thanks for all the replies guys, very informative. I think I'll go the rifle route.

The land is owned by our family so all is good. I would invite you all but then there will be nothing left for me :). I'll look at the howa 243 varmint.

While I do like the Howa 243 varmint and intend to buy one sometime to replace my CZ 243 varmint, I would not rate it as ideal for your purposes.

A 223 will be much better on everything except the bushpigs. There, even a 243 is a little on the light side. It is however possible to dispatch the bushpigs with a 223, if you stick to strong (mono copper) bullets and preferably head shots.

If I were limited to just 1 long gun in your scenario, I would take a medium-weight 223 rifle (like a std Howa, CZ, Tikka, Ruger or whatever tickles your fancy). All of them are capable of taking vervets (and the others) at 250m. Equip it with a scope that can be used from very close to 300m. Something with a 2-10x magnification range should work well. For night use you might want to have a decent WML on a QD mount. A supressor will make it even more user-friendly.

My current pest control rifle is a Zastava M85 in 223 with a small supressor and 3-12x scope. It is still compact enough to be manuverable inside the cab of a bakkie. I would not want to use my heavy 243 for the same purpose.

Do get the 243, but just not for this particular purpose. You can't have too many rifles.

I have heard and read of gentlemen who use their type 56's for similar scenario's, but having not had the opportunity to participate in varminting I am unsure of the practicality thereof.

And look on the bright side, it won't cost you a cent.
Why be like other farmers and pay for Varmint control, when there are so many of us offering our services for free????

Methinks Tweaked is having visions of the farm looking like Bagdad at night footage on CNN we watched during Desert Storm. Flashes of light on the horizon, the rattling of rapid gunfire all around, tracers streaking off into the ozone...:)Maybe thats why he has not extended an open invitation to all and sundry yet!

Vermin control is a shitty job. Especially the nocturnal critters. You work all day only to have to go out at night. If possible try borrow some trap door cages. They work very well with monkeys and porcupines and offer a semi passive method. Also if you are that way inclined they offer a relocation option. The pigs are hard work. Best bet is chat with your neighbours and get a pack of specialised hounds and guys in to sort the offending sounder out. This they can often do in a Saterday morning.

Vermin control us hard work and a shitty job. By all means invite guys offering to help over but choose wisely. People come once or twice. ..get over it...teach the animals to be wise then cause even a harder problem for you ahead.
