    Default TRAFFIC POLICE

Here in Mbombela (White River / Nelspruit area) traffic police do not wear nameplates or badge numbers. They also do not willingly give their names when asked at a traffic stop. When challenged on this issue, a "senior" at a roadblock told me it was to avoid victimisation / revenge attacks.

Is this a common practice around the country? Or just a precaution to get away with taking bribes??....

Will no-one recognise their faces because they have no badge number ?

Is it not a legal requirement for all LEOs to carry some sort of identification?

It's fairly common in GP too. IMO it is just a way of avoiding accountability for bad behaviour, based on the fact that whenever some abuse of power is reported on in the media, the officers involved were not wearing name tags and refused to provide identity.

That being said, most of the JMPD officers who have stopped me have been wearing name tags. I like to address people by name - its good manners and helps establish a rapport with the officer. Once the officer has seen my licence, he usually addresses me by name too. I guess, on some level, its also my way of communicating that "I know your name"

I have been stopped by SAPS today, on the way home from the range...
The cop had a name tag, checked my license, was very professional and promptly let me go.
We need more of those guys!

Correct. There is no law that require a traffic cop to wear a name tag, but under the criminal procedure act he must upon request identify himself by producing a valid appointment certificate/card.

Just imagine the improved efficiency if there was a requirement to wear body cams!
