Re: Reloading for 8x57 JS
Thank you Driepootx , always great to get opinions from members who really have a lot of knowledge..Will see what propellant I will be getting to do this reloading procedure...
It will be nice to see what groupings these loads will shoot in my Mauser 8x57JS. I am sure the loads and rifle will be shooting 100% more accurate than what I will ever be capable of shooting.
The challenge/problem always being the human factor/inability to shoot a rifle accurate every time he /she stands behind a rifle ..
But, being a rifle I have for a long time already, the unquestionable confidence I have in this great rifle will surely ensure that even I will be able to shoot it accurate and get small groups..although the target usually does not run around in the dunes or on a game farm when shooting at it

Re: Reloading for 8x57 JS
Gert, for interest's sake GRT also suggests 54gr s365 to facilitate around a 82% burn from the 29inch barrel, rendering 2945fps with 52k max pressure
50gr s342 seems to give 48k psi, max pressure, for 2869fps over 90% case fill, 93% burn.
50gr s335 seems to render max pressure 55k psi, with 95% fill, 99.6% burn, for 3020fps. (GRT is a bit more 'optimistic' here than QuickLoad, it seems.)
A volksvreemde suggestion could be 50gr Lovex 73.6 : GRT calculates a 2925fps rendition of the 160TTSx, with a mere 44k psi max pressure (max 56k) with 100 burn, 92% casefill and 34% efficiacy. (I've assumed a 8.2mm grooved barrel, 63gr casevolume, 57mm caselength, 80mm cartridge length, a 32.5mm projectile length, and a 350bar / 5076psi starting pressure.)
(T&C's apply!)

Re: Reloading for 8x57 JS
I have a similiar rifle- 1916 Amberg Gewehr98- which barrel I had chopped to 24".
With Hornady 195grain interlock and S335 I am able to shoot groups smaller than 1" at 100 meters. I find that the rifle did made me more recoil shy when shooting from the bench then even my 416Rem. I moved over to N140 Vithavuori due to the unavailability of Somchem S335.
Shoot the rifle and enjoy it!

@driepootx Ouch + 1
GRT produces this when I match the figures you used in that screenshot.

Re: Reloading for 8x57 JS
It seems the newest version of GRT (2011/1943) has an updated S335 file: I'm still working with the previous version (2021/1911 + 2019/11/17 propellant file), new version is 2021/1943 + propellant file 2021/04/11.
New propellant file calculates +-6% more max pressure, but at same speed, fill & burnrate, as per the above.
