Perhaps this is an explanation?

Re: Howa Owners
Been battling to get my Howa .308 bull to group. Scope is tight etc.
Shots 1 and 2 are decent, the 3rd is ALWAYS a flyer. The barrel is most definitely not free floated, tried the old trick of sliding a piece of paper between the barrel and stock, fouls really badly.
Been told it's the Hogue stock that's to blame, you fellas agree?

Re: Howa Owners
Your stock needs some work from some one who knows Howa Voodoo, that stock is doing the Howa thing.

Re: Howa Owners
My problem was that I used a bipod. It pushed the stock against the barrel. I have the basic Hogue rubber stock.
Used a dremel to take away a lot of the material on the stock itself.
I used 2 steel rods that i epoxied into the forend.
Works great now.

Re: Howa Owners
Aluminium angle iron (used in framing adverts etc) hammered slightly open works wonders in all directions of stress if laid in epoxy.
There are more than one thread on this subject.

Re: Howa Owners
I agree with Gobbie. Howa rifles are inherently very accurate. A short term fix would be to to add a slight spacer under the front lug. x-ray film or even a layer or 2 of plastic from a 2l coke bottle. This needs to be tightened down well. it lifts the barrel off the stock. Also file down / dremel down any high spots on the stock.

Re: Howa Owners
Oddly, I had put some hard PET plastic on each lug which raised the barrel up by 0.5mm, however it actually made the groups worse. I really love the feel of the Hogue stock but can't deal with the scattering of ammo anymore. Ordered a Smoking Guns Stock today.
