    Default ***Breaking News*** Over 2,270 firearms lost or stolen by SAPS between 2014 and 2017

    This is a terrible indication of the sad state of affairs within and the total lack of discipline and controls at the SAPS. Minister Fikile Mbalula has today detailed how thousands of police firearms have been lost or stolen over the past three years. Responding to a parliamentary question from the DA’s Zak Mbhele‚ Mbalula said that:--

    • 743 weapons were lost or stolen in 2014-15;
    • 767 in 2015-16; and
    • 760 in 2016-17.

    By my reckoning, this means that over 2,270 FA were lost or stolen and, one might say, a large number of them have found their way into the hands of criminals and un-licensed people.

    We should be demanding that each of the officers involved are (a) disciplined or, where appropriate, fired; and (b) prosecuted to the full extent of the law, in much the same way as the SAPS would try to do so where civilian gun-owners lose, misplace or have their FA's stolen from them where the FA's were incorrectly/improperly stored.

    That is a substantial number for such a short period of time.

    If you look at the poor record keeping and lack of supervision and control within the SAPS then the fact that this is happening should not come as a surprise.
