Re: PH aperture sight for Lee Enfield - visual lexicon (pic heavy)
I had a look in the book Firearms Developed and Manufactured in South Africa - 1949 to 2000 - A reference guide by the Pretoria Arms and Ammunition Association - Edited by Chas Lotter.
Under the heading: War Production, the book mention Delfos Bros & Co in Pretoria was producing No.1 MkIII barrels at the rate of 1000/month by 1943.
But then, on the next page, discussing immediate post war production:
"The Defense Production Office was established in 1951, as a section of the Department of Defense. It's task was to act as a channel through which locally manufactured equipment could be sourced.
This was followed by the construction of an armaments workshop (known as the Defense Ordnance Workshop) in Lyttelton in Pretoria during 1952 and 1953. The British influence continued since Birmingham Small Arms (BSA) was approached to initially oversee production at the new facility. Production included parts for the Lee-Enfield military rifle as well as Parker-Hale aperture sights and rifle bolts. By 1954 a total of 4150 barrels had been produced locally and, by 1958, local production of some 6000 firearms per year was achieved."
So maybe D.O.W. is actually Defense Ordnance Workshop, and and not Delfos Bros & Co..?

Daan beat me to the possible answer - I'm sitting with the PAAA "Green Bible" in my lap ;)
I concur with him in that Delfos might actually be Defense Ordnance Workshop.
I also have a sneaky suspicion that due to the skilled nature of the work you'll see a lot of the same names on the employment roll (if you can find such a roll).
Just to add, the DOW plant was officially opened on 21st Oct 1953 with a workforce of 147 people.

Would this be the same company that later became LIW?

Just as a curiosity ...
Looking for information on the production of Delfos in Pretoria, I found this medal, I highlighted the interesting part in red.

It might be the right way forward....

The only "ATLAS" company that springs to my mind amalgamated with DENEL quite a few years ago.
Do yourself a favor and get the Pretoria Arms and Ammunition Associations' book - its mind boggling the amount of info it contains and the research they did. Camo here on the forum used to stock them.
