Re: Which jacket for cold weather to get?
Buy a Down Jacket from a respectable company like Columbia, North Face etc.

Re: Which jacket for cold weather to get?
I've worn something like this, wasn't mine I just tried it on.
The problem is it feels like a toy, feels like something made for yuppies, I would not wear it in the veld, sure it wont last one day as well.
It's been cold in europe for centuries, nothing new, so surely there must be a work line of clothing, meaning stuff that's made for everyday work outdoors. Stuff that's extremely durable, very warm, yet made for hard work.
Never been to europe, so what is their equivalent to cold workwear?

Re: Which jacket for cold weather to get?
Having been in England for several winters I could never understand why people insisted on me getting long underwear when going over there in winter... Until my last trip when it got to -12Cish a few times (which compared to other places is not even that cold) and I really wished I had some too. Being outside in that kind of cold with only jeans, you stop feeling your legs after a while. And if you stand still, you try and stand VERY still, so that your freezing jeans does not touch your legs.
The previous trips warm socks, jeans, t-shirt, K-Way fleece and 'n long coat when going out had me plenty warm. Now I wont go again without a beanie, gloves, long underwear and a scarf at least.
The difference between SA winter and over there is that here, its cold everywhere, pretty much all the time. Over there every building is heated, so whenever you are inside, you are mostly warm.

Re: Which jacket for cold weather to get?
Dressing in layers is key.
Thermal / wicking base layer, middle fleece layer and then a Gortex or down outer layer.
