Default Questionable warnings from SAPS Deputy Provincial Commissioner Maj. Gen Jan Scheepers

“Scheepers took a very harsh stance on the issue of social media and in particular the use of WhatsApp groups to spread information on serious crimes. According to him, social media is the biggest cause of cases going unsolved and criminals escaping prosecution. “
““WhatsApp groups should be limited to 10 or 15 individuals who are crucial to the operations of your particular farm watch or related group. There is no need to have 200 members of your community on a group meant for the purpose of emergency response to a crime. No, I repeat, no photographs or videos of crime scenes or suspects are permitted to be shared over WhatsApp or any social media platform as it can result in the case being thrown out of court immediately.” Major General Mbazima Ngobeni reiterated “
““In the recent case of mango theft in Ofcolaco, messages were shared on all these WhatsApp groups calling for all the farmers in the area to rush to the scene to help. Criminals intercepting these messages immediately know that all security companies and farm watch groups along with the police are now in that one place and they then hit other areas with the knowledge that they will not face any resistance. Stop this WhatsApp business for everyone’s benefit because it is creating more havoc than good.””

whats creating havoc is the fact that the government gets paid billions in tax revenue from the largest private security industry in the world

so why kill the goose that lays the golden egg by actually equipping and mandating saps to do the job that many members are crying out to do?

the interview i saw from 1994 with jesse duarte explained how they managed to make crime a commodity in South africa

I think it's a fair point to be honest. OpSec is a concern when it comes to large unvetted groups disseminating information relating to criminal activity.
I am part of a large traffic news and safety group and it is routinely used to post info on SAPS or Traffic Dept roadblocks or cameras, fine checks etc. It's nice to know this info so that travel times can be adjusted but I've noticed that certain individuals always enquire about the presence of roadblocks, especially at around the time that pubs close in town on weekends. Makes driving drunk, unlicensed or unroadworthy more likely for those individuals if they can avoid the authorities. Likewise anyone looking to commit more serious crimes.

Like most things it comes down to balancing the good use against the abuse.

If the criminal takes your cell or Tablet when at house and leaves.
And that device is on a group. They will receive the message on it from the group.

I dont understand though why he sees it as an issue to inform people in the area to be on look out.

Due to the new POPI act, sending images identifying possible suspects on any public domain, before they have been charged, WILL lead to case being thrown out of court if their lawyer can prove they were broadcast on public domain.
It is a massive problem that has the potential to derail neighborhood watches and concerned community groups ability to assist in catching suspects via taking advantage of simple technology.
In our area we have already had 2 'traditionally slam dunk' cases of muggers caught by community initiatives utilizing Whatsapp to inform and broadcast pics of suspected perps thrown out..

And yet some of the police units also work on whatsapp groups. Rather large groups.
I am sure there is not a single leak on those groups.

Now I'm really confused... Why on earth would breaches of the POPI Act result in criminal matters being thrown out of court!?

Nevermind the fact that the bulk of POPI isn’t even in force yet.
