English Cocker spaniel blood tracking training
Hi everyone,
I am looking for someone who can help train me and an English Cocker spaniel to track blood on my hunting farm.
I don't have the puppy yet but I have reserved one from a friend's litter.
Any advice will be great.

Re: English Cocker spaniel blood tracking training
I have a Boykin spaniel and she blood trails without any training. However, she doesn't bark when finding the deer or other game. I reinforced her blood trailing by keeping her in my truck until a deer had been lung shot and then proceeding to track it with her on a long leash. I urged her on and rewarded her when the deer was found.
She really never needed a reward. Finding the game was the reward.

Hi
I am in the Eastern Cape - a bit far otherwise you could have joined me. I am training
my 7.5 month old Springer Spaniel every day at the moment as well as my Labrador.

Re: English Cocker spaniel blood tracking training
Ha ha. That is exactly what I did. Picked up my Springer Spaniel puppy from the airport, went
home and waited for my wife to come home. She was absolutely delighted and still is because
they are wonderful dogs but as he got older instinct and training took over. He goes after birds
all the time, much to my wife and daughters displeasure. Same with my Labrador. Once they get a taste for
feathers cute turns into a hunting machine. When they see me carrying my shotgun all hell breaks
loose in a way that the girls are immediately alerted. When I come back from hunting they are invariably
covered in mud, damp, blood caked around their muzzles and the odd feather in their coats - not the
condition for cuddles and kisses. Pisses them off like you wont believe.

Re: English Cocker spaniel blood tracking training
I can just imagine what she would look like.
Mine is a Springer Spaniel, not a Cocker. I got him from a breeder in Pretoria. She
has let me know that she will only be breeding again late next year.
I have also heard good things about a breeder in Port Alfred though I have no details.
