    Update:
Dangerous Game Hunting course in Practice:
We arrived at the Southern African Wild life College on Friday the 20 th July at 13h00.

This is the group who participated in the course with us is Pieter Nel and Gawie Lindeque our course training officials.

We booked our rifles in at the College safe and went to the camp to off load our gear . We immediately departed to receive our theory class that was conducted by Pieter Nel while Gawie did our admin /certificates for us .
The theory was extremely interesting, I learned a lot about elephants I never know beforehand. We completed the theory three hours later since it really is a lot of work to go through...all important information that gives us a broad picture of what is expected of us during the course.

Practicing shot placement on a skeleton of an elephant head standing three meters above the ground....

We then went back to camp to prepare dinner over the camp fire:

    The food was exceptional :

Then there was our home brew coffee and condensed milk that is an all time favorite around a camp fire..

That concludes our first day on the Dangerous Game hunting course...we were entertained with hyena and jackal sounds around the camp while we sat around the camp fire..

    Day Two:
    Tracking elephant by following fresh tracks;;

By looking at an elephant track you will be able to tell the following before even set eyes on the elephant:
    The age of the elephant
    The hight of the elephant
    The direction the elephant went
If the elephant is in must
On what set of teeth the elephant is on at that stage by looking at his dung .
All this information by looking at his track:

    Tracking and reading signs:

On the tracks of the elephant:

    Then we found the elephant:

While we stand and look at the elephant bull at fifteen yards we discuss the weight of the tusks, the age of the elephant, shot placement from the front, the side brain shot and heart/lung shot as well..the anchor shot placement when he departs...
We tracked a lot of elephants on the Saturday as well as on the Sunday:

We spend the whole Saturday tracking and stalking elephants to practice our skills in determining the age of the elephant, weight of tusks, height of elephant ....
    Glassing for elephants was priority:

A clip from the action camera:

    Sunday morning:
Shooting skills being tested...every one needs to use a dangerous game rifle and use it accurately ...we spend some time shooting on the range at targets to see how accurate and fast the participants shoot their rifles. The calibers we used was .375 H &H Magnum and a .458 Mannlicher Schoenauer , my personal rifle .

Gawie Lindeque explaining to us how to best reload and shoot a dangerous game animal rifle ...

Gawie explain the double stacking by short stroking the bolt handle as well as using a flat palm/hand to open and close the bolt at fast pace when shooting at a dangerous game animal..

Gawie explain the danger by using a clenched fist to cycle the bolt since one of the fingers can pull the trigger while your hand is clenched over the bolt handle..always cycle by using a flat hand to hit/pull the bolt handle open or shut it close as hard as possible..

Then it was time to do some real live shooting at elephant targets. These are life size targets ..in different positions to execute different shot placements on the elephant.
We had two good camera men...running at full pace:

Waiting for the next person to go through the course.

Here are some action camera videos of the targets we shot at:

Some video clips of the elephants we approach to practice shot placement and to estimate the weight /length of the tusks...
Notice the bundling we made ..it is to confuse the elephant..we are breaking up the human form...this confuse the elephant..in the following videos you will notice this....

This video clip shows the warning signs of an elephant bull when disturbed...the signs you need to look for is :
The tail stops wagging and gets stiff. The ears stop swaying and the body of the elephant bull goes silent...

This video was taken during our buffalo course last year..this is the behaviour of an elephant bull that do not understand why these things( humans ) do not run away as he approaches...
There is not such a thing as a clever elephant...every elephant is born with a blank brain..no memory nothing..the elephant learn all the behaviour from his mother and other members of the group...
As a juvenile the elephant calf learn quite quickly that every pigeon, small game runs /fly away when he charges them..this behaviour you see in this video indicates that this elephant is confused ..he do not understand what is going on,,...since these strange things do not run away when he approaches...

During the course we had the opportunity to approach several bulls. One of the bulls was is musth ..we came across his track on the gravel road we were driving. Firsts we all gathered around the track to discuss the different signs we saw in the footprint of this particular elephant. We noticed a few interesting signs about the elephant , one of the important signs is the droplets of must all around the footprint, these droplets had an extremely foul smell. Another sign is that this elephant was about thirty five years old, due to the footprint that was warn down into a lot of small cracks and puzzle -like imprints in the footprint..some pointers to look at when we studied the elephant`s foot print in the sand.....following fresh tracks

Tracking this old elephant by study it`s foot print in the sand..

    Freshly eaten branch.

Hot on it`s tracks, we were following a clear trail..with fresh dung and foot prints..of this old elephant bull:

Got him, now for the approach..
