Thread: Fleshing knife

  1. #1

    Default Fleshing knife

    Hi.

Does anybody know where I can get a fleshing knife locally? It is used in hide preparation before you start the tanning process. Used to remove excess meat and sinew off the hide.

    Thanks

    Alfie

Oh snap. Just been watching a fleshing vid by a favourite youtube channel of mine - Skillcult- and was wondering that same thing. Reckon I might make my own.

(Also, check out skillcult.com/freestuff for some great tanning ebooks)

    An old "speekskaaf" should work?

Contact the Guild for a knifemaker near you. http://www.kgsa.co.za/ The knife you are looking for is easy to make and some of the guys make tools for day to day work without the fancy expensive extras.

You could phone CW from Spirit of Africa taxidermy in Howick as I know he makes his own from a panga I think but not sure how exactly.

    Thanks all.

I will talk to the above mentioned.

Also saw a bloke using a high pressure washer with orbital nozzle and seems to also work quite well. Luckily I have one of those. Will give it a whirl tonight

Made a fleshing knife this morning out of a lasher machete. Works fairly well. Just need to get the edge bevel correct and it'll do the trick.

Alfie did you ever try the high pressure washer as a matter of interest? Prepping for next year and keen to see if this worked.
