Breach loading shotgun...what is required?
Chaps I need to pointed in the right direction here.
I bought a side by side not knowing it wasn't nitro proofed. That makes nitro dangerous in it so intend to use black powder.
Obviously I don't need a muzzle loading proficiency because it isn't a muzzle loader.
So do I just apply for a BP permit from the explosives guys, based on the fact that it is a breach loader and it is licensed?
Thanks folks.

I don't think the explosives guys will grant you a BP permit without having ML competency.

Get a gunsmith report that confirms your shotgun to be safe with BP only. With that and the license in hand, visit your SAPS explosives section and ask them what the procedure would be.
The rub here is that you may or may not be given the correct advice. My local section commander got confused between the requirements for buying BP and Nitro powder, and did not even consider reading the act when requested to do so in a friendly manner. Eventually we had to go right to the top to get the matter sorted out...

Re: Breach loading shotgun...what is required?
I've always heard it referred to it as Black Powder competency, not Muzzle Loader competency. My understanding is that the competency is more about possessing & using Black Powder, irrespective of whether it's in a Muzzle Loader or Breach Loader. OK, we all know that in practice, most Black Powder goes into muzzle loaders and maybe because of that it is colloquially referred to or regarded as muzzle loader competency.

Necro post...turns out damascus steel shotties work fine with nitro powder...as far as bird shot is concerned.
