Yes, but not initially. At one (very late!) stage the Transvaal Guv'ment woke up and jumped up and down, enraged because burghers were neglecting their civil duty to arm themselves. When Genl. Piet Joubert bought single shot rifles (less than the best), he was fronwned upon. The Guv'ment went ahead and issued them with one of thé best rifles available at the time. Wish our beloved Guv'ment could take a hint from history (in my dreams) and issue us with some decent guns before it is too late.
