Default mag drop empty / retention - clarification needed

    1. If the course of fire does not specify slide lock reload, and you drop the empty mag to the ground with a round in the chamber, is it a PE ?

    2. If the course of fire does not specify slide lock reload, and the shooter does a mag change with retention before changing position so as not to have to reload during a segment, is it a PE ?

    1. Yes

Thats my understanding of the rules.

    My novice SO opinion:
    1. It is a PE if the CoF specifies a RWR or a Tac Reload. See 2005 rules P41&42 the first 'NOTE' under each type or reload.
    2. I would not give you a PE for this if I am the SO. Others may differ. As far as I am concerned you can do a Tac Reload or a RWR at any time as long as you are behind cover and the CoF does not specifically exclude it.

It is always a PE if you drop and discard an empty mag when the gun is NOT COMPLETELY EMPTY not only when a RWR or TR is specified. When you decide to do a voluntary RWR or TR you must retain the empty mag.

You can only drop and leave an empty mag when your gun is completely empty.

    You are 100% right Khumba.

I read the rules again and what is described by 414gates in point 1 is what is called a speed or slide down reload. IDPA specifically prohibits speed or slide down reloads (2005 rules, Appendix 11 Glossary, P79) and only allow the 3 types (RWR, TR and slidelock)

At my age mini-Alzheimer is a real problem and I need to re-read / review the rulebook more often!
