Default Subsonic lethal range , if target is missed

So on my last hunting trip, the farmer took us shooting Indian mynahs and a few crows. Most were in trees. We used a Brno .22 with a suppressor, shooting 40gr subsonics. I was thinking about this, how dangerous are those 40gr bullets when missing the birds and going up. They must come down. ...I felt irresponsible in all honesty.

How dangerous? Very very dangerous out to 2km or more. That is how my cousins spend months and months with multiple operations in hospital and basically bankrupted their family.

Can you share details of what happened? And the type of injury? And the distance he was from the initial shot?

I would like to learn what is possible, based on his story.

At least you know now that it is a mistake. The learning curve is steep for some people. Now you can do it again thinking of safety first. (ps. when I started hunting, the old manne taught me to use FMJ and how to hunt at night with a spotlight on langplaas). When I started to read up on hunting (years before the internet) I got the knowledge to know the difference between right and wrong in hunting

Can someone with a ballistic calculator run a HV and subsonic .22lr at 1000m? What would the energy and velocity be? I'm curious.
