Default The allure of the Big bore rifle..

So looking at the various big bore pages on Facebook, I realised the average South African owner does not use his big bore for DG hunting, but more for his regular biltong hunts. Seeing as a 308/30-06 could have worked just fine for his hunts, what exactly do people enjoy about big bores, considering they not the cheapest to shoot.

Well, they are great fun to shoot and hunt with, so....why not? I've shot my biggest elk with a .30-06 and the smallest with a .458 Winchester Magnum. People drive fast cars even if the speed limits prohibit them from utilizing their full potential. Why? Because driving them is also fun.

I hunt everything with my 404, so the times I go DG hunting I know I have tested it all and know my gun.

And its fun to see how people stare at those supposedly huge rounds :)

It also puts animals down with more authority.

Not just the cartridge but the history. The rifles are usually built on more classic lines. Usually better wood etc. Plus as a kid which one of us didn't play on old cannons/guns.Not quite the same but a big bore is as close as most of us will get.

Makes sense thanks. So my thought of the "romantic" side is correct, reading old hunting stories, stalking game with a charge stopping rifle, there just seems something more to it.

I'm in the opposite camp...much prefer my small bores. Maybe like my woman I prefer them a little skinnier....;)
