Re: 308 surplus ammo
From what I understand, it is illegal to own military ammo.

Re: 308 surplus ammo
No. There is NO law stating you may not own, or be in possession of military ammo, provided you have a license for the said caliber.
SS109 ammo (5.56 AP) has been available for some time in S.A, completely legal to sell to public, so no reason why you cannot be in possession of military or police ammo. I would love to know where this 'myth' started...

Re: 308 surplus ammo
I obviously have a license for the 308 calibre so if its not illegal its just a matter if finding a place where you can buy them or something. I wouldnt be surprised if the government started that myth.

Re: 308 surplus ammo
The only ammo you may not own, even if licenced for that caliber, is any ammo with an explosive or incendiary component like API etc. Not 100% sure about tracer.

Re: 308 surplus ammo
You are correct, it is not illegal to be in possession. There was something on this on here a little while ago. It has to do with the source of the ammo. Some ammo may not be sold to the public {or the military may not sell ammo or something} and thus if in the possession of this ammo you are in possession of "stolen" goods since the ammo is not available for purchase at your local store.

Re: 308 surplus ammo
Just to keep things straight, the SS109 and any other 62gr FMJ ammo with the tiny so called 'penetrator' in the tip (US M855, etc) is NOT Armour Piercing.
This is a common misconception but it is completely untrue. In fact, at closer ranges it is not uncommon to see standard 55gr ball out penetrate SS109 due to increased velocity.
5.56x45 AP does exist but it is difficult to find on the market and may be unlawful for civilians to possess in some places.Run Fast, Bite Hard!

Re: 308 surplus ammo
As I understand it 308 & 7.62x51mm are NOT the same.

Re: 308 surplus ammo
Correct, and neither are 5.56x45 and .223 but people mix the terms all the time.
To be honest I never knew that till a couple of weeks ago.
