FOUNDING OF ISLAM IN THE CAPE
1699 MAY 23, Sheik Yusuf, Islamic leader and brother to the Sultan of Makassar Indonesia. Yusuf was born in MaKassar in 1626 died in Zandveilt in the Cape. He is regarded as the founder of Islam in the Cape.

Thanks for Posting. My Great Grandmother came from Indonesia. My Great Grandfather came from Scotland . Lots of my family history is in the Cape, with many prominent Leaders and founders. My Grandfather was originally from India and was a renowned scholar of Islam , a Politician, Boxer, Cricket Player and Doctor. They led simple lives are were regarded as great people of the times

Part of my ancestry was a lady from Makassar from my mother's side. That was in the 1700's. I read up on the people from Makassar. The men were rated as great fighters and the women as eye candy.

Interesting read...he is regarded as the founder although he arrived almost 30 years after the first recorded Muslims. Would this be because he galvanized the Muslim community?
