Re: Hunting kudu: I need help/hints/tips

Camo, without good camo it's going to be tough. Just kidding, similar circumstances to yours, thick thorn stuff, got lucky at midday, no path, no water nearby, just happened.
Probably the animal was perplexed by the jeans and the camo cap.
Enjoy.

Re: Hunting kudu: I need help/hints/tips
Yeah honestly I'm not a big camo believer. I've shot more in a striped jersey and jeans with my running shoes than with browns and boots with a khaki jacket. I have camo cap though. And gloves. Also got camo gloves, so there's that.

Blue jeans? then you look like a zebra standing in a water hole. The Kudu will walk right up to you.

Re: Hunting kudu: I need help/hints/tips
Toxxyc, I hunted my first Kudu last year in namibia. Also mostly used to smallish game. But to me at the end of the day it all comes down to the basics. You focus on that and getting a clean shot to put the outjie down cleanly and "humanely", then the rest falls into place.

Re: Hunting kudu: I need help/hints/tips
Toxxyc, you said:
- You are confident with your rifle
- You know where the killzone is and you know that the killzone is bigger than the animals you normally hunt
- You will feel no pressure to shoot from a guide or due to trying to fill orders
- There will be other opportunities if it does not happen on your upcoming hunt
Sounds like all is in order. Perhaps you have placed kudu on a bit of a pedestal for whatever reason. Perhaps because of their beauty, their elusive reputation and because you have never shot one before. I think this is perfectly normal. I haven't shot a new species in a while but I always felt some extra excitement when hunting an animal I had never shot before.
Enjoy the excitement and embrace it. When it comes to taking the shot, the kudu deserves the same level of diligence and application that you apply to any other animal you hunt.

Re: Hunting kudu: I need help/hints/tips
Alright. So the time has come, and the time has gone. "Grey ghost" indeed. I have to add here that I haven't proper hunted in years. Financial knocks the last few years meant I either just went on day hunts, culling sprees or just simply didn't go hunting when opportunities arose. It's been years since I walked and stalked the bush, and I realized that this weekend. I am unfit and not used to the activity. I struggled to properly stalk. I found it harder to walk quietly than ever before. I struggled to concentrate on the job at hand. At first I thought I had lost the art of tracking as well, and while I was never the world's best tracker, at least that is something I didn't completely lose. I managed to find fresh spoor and track kudu twice, but both times they must have heard me coming from a mile, because the only glimpses I had was when the cows where sprinting at full speed through the bush, back up the mountain, with no chance to track over the rocks and into those thick, thick bushes.
So in the end I got nothing. Well, "nothing". What I did get was a supreme respect for the South African bush from the start. I got plenty of glimpses at other animals and spent a good 20 minutes watching a pair of Grey Rhebuck casually strolling up to me, knowing damn well I was there, but I had no intent of hunting them. I watched a ton of birds, managed to get a position in the veld and hide myself so well that the birds (including those pesky kwęvoëls) came up to within 5m of me without knowing of my presence. It was humbling to do this again. I can't wait to go back. Next date back "up there" is booked for end August. Then I have choice of Kudu and BWB, so I'm sure I might get lucky then.
