Zindzi Mandela's family held up

Johannesburg - Zindzi Mandela and a number of family members were attacked in their driveway on Sunday night, Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said on Thursday.

The crime occurred as they were returning home on the day Zindzi's father, former president Nelson Mandela, celebrated his 92nd birthday.

"The driver was taking the children (home) and as they were getting into the gates, and getting out of the car, they were approached by two unknown men," said Mariemuthoo.

They were ordered to lie down, but then the men decided to leave.

However, they returned and searched the group, but then one of the men suddenly fired a shot. The victims' driver returned fire and the men left.

"Nothing was taken and no one was injured," said Mariemuthoo, adding that police were still investigating.

...and now security will be stepped up for them at the taxpayers expense. i realise that this is an unfortunate incident but whether it is mandela's family or piet pompies family makes no difference. nobody was hurt in this incident but it makes the news, the other few hundred south africans who were murdered and raped in the last couple days....nobody even cares. i feel like vomitting.

Take note of the MO here. Does it seem logical? They certainly knew who they were targeting, right?

To me it seems likely that they were sent to do a "job", but realised the gravity of the situation and could not go through with it. Also, the fact that a shot was fired, no one hit, and the "driver" only then returning fire does not make any sense.

But then, these situations rarely make sense.

Bring on the conspiracy theories.

Alot of what is currently going on our beloved country smacks of a "destabilising" campaign. All the nonsense around lower crime rates during SWC to me was such a beautifully played smoke screen (aka propoganda) and the other "isolated" incidents such as this and increasingly corrupt SAP are all signs that should not be ignored.

Then there is the attempt to re-ignite xenophobia...

I take my hat off to the orchestrators of this offensive. All the small voices crying wolf are silenced without contest, and so the world believes that all is well.

We are entering a very sad time in our country's history.

Police are being tightlipped about an attempted hijacking or robbery outside Zindzi Mandela's home in Athol on Sunday evening.

All Brigadier Govindsamy Mariemuthoo of the provincial police headquarters would say this morning was that a case of attempted hijacking was opened on Wednesday at Bramley police station, three days after the incident.

"I can confirm that we are busy with investigations," he said.

He couldn't say why the case was reported so late.

Mariemuthoo said a driver transporting children of the family entered the gate at Zindzi Mandela's home in Athol on Sunday evening around 6.30pm.

"As they entered the yard, suddenly two armed black males approached them. They ordered them to lie down," he said.

Mariemuthoo said the attackers left then returned and opened fire. A bodyguard with the family returned fire.

"One suspect fired a shot and the driver returned fire. They then fled the scene," he said.

He would not give any other information.

The family had apparently been returning home after attending Nelson Mandela's birthday celebrations.

A police source told The Star that the bodyguards were privately hired and were not from the police VIP protection unit.

A car with bullet holes in it and fitting the description of the one used by the attackers was recovered.

Eyewitness News reported that the car was recovered by the West Rand Dog Unit in Honeydew the same evening and that one of the attackers may have been shot in the leg when the driver returned fire.

Witnesses told Eyewitness News that men in suits, believed to be from the police's VIP Unit, arrived at the Athol house and removed bullet casings from the driveway and then vanished.

Firstly The 2 attackers get them on the ground then decide to walk away! Possibly because they didnt know who they were hitting and then someone says "do you know who I am", which changes thier mind, so they bail. Plausible.

Why then do they return? why is it only now that the bodygaurd opens fire? Why did he do nothing at the outset?And whats with the suits pitching up to clean up evidence?
Something stinks here bigtime.

The cops are now questioning why the incident was only reported several days after it happened. Yep, something stinks and it is not just the skid marks in the bodyguards undies.

What I would like to know is:1 Why did the driver have a firearm? Dont he and his employers belong to a party aiming for a SA free of civilian firearms?
If the firearm in question was legally, privately owned, I wish I could know whether the driver applied for relicencing, and where in the system his application is at the moment. If he did not apply, he was obviously benefitting from the interim relief of the SAHGCA court case.
The private bodyguards on the other hand belongs to (or work for)the group of firearm-owners targeted by the CFR to seriously reduce the number of excess firearms in private hands. (According to my DFO.) In the long run, they would obviously be benefitting from the Fedility Guards settlement, where CFR had to issue temporary permits in a hurry to be in time for the Soccer.
Some words of thanks from Grandpa to these pro-firearm groups would not be amiss!

Nothing was stolen during Mandela shootout

Armed attackers were involved in a shootout after they raided the home of Nelson Mandela's daughter Zindzi in Atholl, Sandton, on Sunday night.

Zindzi's children had been driven home after Mandela's birthday party around 6.30pm.

When the car stopped in the yard of the house, two armed men suddenly approached them and told them to lie down. Details of what happened next are sketchy.

Gauteng police spokesman Brigadier Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said the attackers then left, but returned and opened fire. A family bodyguard returned fire.

"One suspect fired a shot and the driver returned fire. They then fled," Mariemuthoo said.

No family members were injured and nothing was reported stolen.

Late yesterday afternoon, a policeman stood guard at the entrance to the house.

Residents in the plush suburb said they had heard between five and six shots around 6pm on Sunday.

"There was one shot, a pause and then two, three, four, five maybe six," said one man, who didn't want to be named.

Another witness said that when they came to see what had happened, they found two young men standing in the driveway talking on cellphones. There was no vehicle.

"We asked what had happened, but they didn't want to talk to us," she said.

A source said it seemed that the gang were not aware that their victims were members of the Mandela family.

Mariemuthoo said a case of attempted hijacking was opened yesterday.

They hang around waiting in ambush outside a home in a nieghbourhood like that and claim that they did not know who it was?

Or were they just out for a "shopping trip", driving around and happened to be passing by as this random vehicle entered a random driveway and then pounced in a moment of opportunism? I doubt whether this type of criminal hits a target without at least some homework.

Police on Wednesday confirmed that they are investigating an attempted murder after a shootout at the Joburg home of Nelson Mandela's daughter Zindzi in July.

At the time, police would not reveal much, saying only that a shootout had taken place outside the family's Atholl home and that the case was not opened until days later - though they wouldn't explain why.

But in questions posed to Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa by DA shadow minister Dianne Kohler-Barnard, it was revealed yesterday that the family bodyguard had delayed opening a docket on July 18, because he was "traumatised".

Raphael Bekie Kubeka defended the Mandela family against three gunmen when they opened fire on the family's car.

Nobody was injured in the incident and nothing was reported stolen.

And while three police officers reported to the scene, a case docket was not opened that night.

Asked why, the minister replied that Kubeka would not make a statement to have the case registered.

"It is alleged the complainant (Kubeka) was traumatised and that he indicated to police officials on the scene that he will go to the police station the following day to make a statement and register a case."

Kubeka finally laid a charge on July 21.
