Default Price of a "custom" rifle.

What does it cost to build a big bore rifle? Not a double , but let's use something like a 404 Jeff as an example. For a working example, no fancy engraving etc, what price range are we looking at.

Not sure on the price, but hopefully Gert Odendaal comes across the thread.
Johan Greyling built a few 404's,so he should hopefully be able to give some input

I suppose a custom rifle means different things to different people.

So for many it is an existing known action (CZ550 eg.) in a fancy stock with nice figured walnut, ebony caps, fancy engraving, sliver accessories like your initials.

For others it is cutting the barrel from scratch, cutting the chamber to give perfect head space, machining the bolt and action.

There are probably other permutations like going to Rigby and getting all the above plus the measure you perfectly for the stock to ensure perfect check weld. comb height and roll over etc. Perhaps even some scrimshaw work.

So what is a custom rifle to you?

Good point Andrew. For the sake of clarity I was looking at a custom build working rifle. Decent wood, new barrel and action, stock to fit. Nothing fancy. I did a custom stock job on my 375 a few years back, I got a nice Turkish Walnut blank, had it made to fit, added a recoil pad, new scope rings and changed out the safety on the rifle to a Winchester type on the cocking piece and it cost 10K.

Cannot help with price, but the only thing that comes to mind when discussing price vs big bore custom rifle want is:

From what I have been asking around. You are looking at north of R60k.

Ok so the next question has to be WHY?

Is this an investment, an experiment or a I want a custom rifle just to have one.

I believe that this will cost you upwards of R 100k and unless the maker has a reputation that can sustain a resell of R 100k or more it become an exercise in futility.
