Who uses Impala horn for knife hand;es
As the title says, who uses impala horn for knife handles. I have had a set sent to me and been asked to use it to make a set of knives for a friends sons. There was an old set as well and when split the center was dried and fell out.
I would be gratefull to fins out how the horn is used for handle work

Re: Who uses Impala horn for knife hand;es
I have a few friends who make knives and the trick seems to be to salvage only the outer layer, whether impala, kudu or buffalo. Being in NZ you may not be aware that antelope horns are very different to deer antlers. Bang that into the microwave for a minute or two to soften it (make sure the wife is out as the stench is serious!) then flatten it out. Once it has cooled it is workable.

I have an oven in the shed Peter and have done the flattening of them but it seems it will leave a gap under it as it dosent flatten completly with the ridges of uneven height causing gaps underneath. What do you fill under this space with?

Hell, I like those Jacques
That's a different way of using horn - as a complete 'tube' rather than slabs which I, possibly wrongly, took to be where Von Gruff was going.

Keith du Plessis used to use different antelope horns as handles.
Flattened and polished them.

Re: Who uses Impala horn for knife hand;es
thanks Peter, I have other horns and will be using them soon. Sometimes I might use them as collars or shims, between guards and the rest of handles. At the risk of being a bit cheeky. Look up "La Petite Forge" on Insta, Facebook and Twitter. I often have some available straight after manufacture.

Re: Who uses Impala horn for knife hand;es
Some great posts here guys. Thank you. I take from them that either the tube part of the horn is used which I assume is epoxy filled. I had intended to use the larger part of the horn, split and flattened only because it was.is the only way I can see to be able to have the handle shape that the customer had prefered but I will see if there is any movement in this request/decision.
