    Default Karoo Hunt

    Hi,

my family and I spent the last week on a farm in the Schoombee district, between Middelburg & Steynsburg in the Easter Cape.

I took my .30-06 along and did some hunting as well.

The first morning of hunting found us climbing some mountains in search of a Mountain Reedbuck ram. We found a herd, but could not get a shot in on the ram. The view from the top:

We hunted Springbuck that afternoon, with no luck.

The next morning we stalked along the Groot Brak river and found a herd of fallow deer grazing in an open field. There were a couple of stags in the herd and I shot the biggest one. Not a monster (20"), but it is my first stag. My first shot was not a good one. He separated from the herd and it took a second shot to put him down.

That afternoon we went looking for a Mountain Reedbuck ram again. We found a herd grazing along the side of a koppie. As we approached them, they spotted us and made their way over the top of the koppie. We found the ram and he stopped for a second to offer a shot. He measured 6 5/8"

The next morning we went after some black Springbuck rams which had crawled through a fence. As the farmer wanted them shot, he offered me one at the cost of a normal ram. I managed to shoot the smaller of the two, 12 3/4" - big for a Karoo black Springbuck!

Had a great hunt in that area last month, we were on Hillston Farm (Owner is Johnathen Southey). Our group shot a mountain reedbuck, seven springbuck and two blessbuck. All nice specimen. I love that area. The people are great too.
