Short barreled .22-250.
Howa offers a .22-250 rifle with a 20" barrel (1 in 9"), how much will the 4" shorter barrel affect the .22-250's performance? Are you going to end up with a really loud .223 rem?

Re: Short barreled .22-250.
Normal wisdom is 25fps/inch... so you'll lose about 100fps compared to the equivalent 24" barrel

Re: Short barreled .22-250.
Mine is a 20 inch barrel ( I think!) Don't notice any field difference to my 24 inch 22-250. It does make the rifle easier to move about in the bakkie. I also was told years back about 25fps per inch.

Re: Short barreled .22-250.
Ran a simulation in QL. Used S355, COL 60mm and 50Vmax.
24 inch - 3578fps with 35,5gr Node 5
20 inch - 3403fps with 35,5gr Node 4
Percentage burn as from 94% and 2% increase with the longer barrel. In practice the drop in speed might be less.

Re: Short barreled .22-250.
Thanks. So, still a good bit faster than a .223 with similar barrel length.

I had a 22 inch 223 long back. There is quite a significant difference in my subjective opinion between the 2. Kinda the same difference I see with a 30-06 and 300wm shooting 180 grainers. Both kill dead but you can see there is a difference on the animal. Marginal shots more so. Can a couple 100fps do that? Don't know if can we put it down to a numerical value? I can see a difference though how the animal reacts ...

****************
You may recall my post bout 4 years ago as is your post but regarding a 18 inch/ 20 inch barreled 223 I was doing for Cody - 1:9 twist.( cut it to 20 inch shot it and went 2 inch less)
The weapon is such a pleasure to handle even with a suppressor and fires 65 and 69 gr bullets with ease and accuracy, If I recall I lost about 180 fps against predicted speeds on 24" barrel.
I do think you would have a much faster than 223 at same length barrel rifle, but also I wonder though if it might not become a 20" 22 250, that is the equivalent of a 24" 223 Win?.

Re: Short barreled .22-250.
A 22-250 is a high velocity catridge. It does it's best work with 24" and longer barrels. Getting one and then reducing the barrel length to 20 is a bit of a contradiction, as it will likely give performance similar to a 24" 223, but with the cost, blast and barrel life of a 22-250. It will, however, still give significantly more velocity than a 20" 223.
The 25 fps per inch rule applies to most medium-velocity calibers at barrel lengths of around 22 - 26 inches. As the barrels get shorter, the fps per inch numbers go up.
Even a 223 will give you more than 25 fps per inch, and with some loads the difference will be closer to 40fps per inch. The 22-250 could easily produce an even bigger difference. Powder burn rate plays a big role in this number as the slower powders give more "push" closer to the muzzle.
Only you can decide weither the handiness of the shorter barrel is worth the reduction in velocity and the increase in blast.

Re: Short barreled .22-250.
That millsurp is cooking with gas. A speed of 3250fps with a 20 inch barrel is at 60K psi (max for 223).
