Default Mauser mod. 1908 action with Musgrave barrel

    Good day

Hope to find some more information on a rifle i recently purchased. The barrel is Musgrave with serial number starting with "OB". The caliber is .308 win and the action is Mauser Mod. 1908. Stock is solid wood and i guess it is wallnut.

Here is my questions, can anyone tell me what the twist rate would be, when was this barrel manufactured. What should be ideal bullet weights for target shooting and hunting and what is the lifespan of the barrel? It is fitted with a Bushnell 3-9×40 scope.

    Thanx

For a Musgrave barrel it's most likely 1:12. It'll happily shoot any bullet up to 33mm length, so most 150-180gr boat tails would be fine. I shoot from 150gr up to 220gr RN bullets from a 1:12 barrel, and I've got subMOA loads for all of them.

ETA: interesting that it has a OB barrel... is the number on the barrel in the form OB762XXX?

Strange. The bolt looks standard fare K-98, but the bolt handle is certainly more modern. From the stock shape I’d have expected the serial would start with D98, but not with that bolt handle.

Friends to me this looks like the Santa Barbara action that musgrave sourced during the 80s.
std 1-10 barrels and will shoot 168 sgk all day long at speed 2650

OB762XXX were specifically the numbers for Vrystaat models. Which just makes me wonder if this is perhaps a barrel from a Vrystaat transplanted onto another action.

Yes, I know that ;-) I date from that era. But I don't believe all Musgrave rifles had OB serial numbers. I do know the Vrystaat models had OB numbers, ergo, I find it interesting that a rifle that is certainly not a Vrystaat model has a barrel with an OB number. Hence also my question regarding the numbers immediately after the OB bit.
