    Totally different action type.

Piston driven guns can be shorter than DI guns and still be reliable.

The big question for anyone considering a semi auto with a Musgrave barrel is the quality of steel used.

I haven't looked up their AR15 spec sheet yet, not much info was given or could be found on the DM4 with Musgrave barrel. (or wasn't when I researched last year comparing different makes)

The question to ask is what grade and type of steel do they use to make their barrels and is it suitable for a semi auto application in the respect of heat build up and round count.

After all most semi auto rifles are not bought for low round count applications.

I found this on a DM4 Spec Sheet not to long ago , believe it will be same

Barrel Material: EN19 Condition T (Nitriding & Stainless Steel available)
    Twist: 1:9” RH

    100% agree.
Barrels are much harder to make.

Not really though. It's a question of profiling the blank.

The amount of machining on AR uppers and lowers is an order of magnitude greater than profiling a barrel.

The amount of maching is more. The complexity (in the context of modern machining techniques, and the need for specialized machinery) is not. The uppers and lowers are "just" normal CNC work. Most of the manufacturers we deal with do more complex components to tighter tolerances on a routine basis.

Yet there are still manufacturers who get it wrong :)

Yes and If the machining is done on a forging it is very important from which forge the blank comes. If it is billet it is very important what grade of aluminium is used. And then there is the anodizing which comes in different levels of hardness and quality.

I was talking about building a barrel not just cutting an existing blank.

Either way there are a number of videos on YouTube of people machining their own uppers and lowers, some even using manual machines. Can't say that I have seen any of them building their own barrels.
That said I also can't say I have seen every video on YouTube.

With the experience that I have with machining I would say that I could probably machine a upper or lower with some effort, but I know that I don't have what it takes to drill and rifle a barrel from a cylinder of steel.

The machining is neither hard nor complex. The operator on the other hand....
