Do not interchange .308 Win with 7.62 x 51 NATO without knowing what you're doing. Dimensions are the same, yes, but pressures aren't. .308 Win is much higher. Shooting a .308 Win round in a rifle made for 7.62 x 51 NATO only can lead to big health problems.

Seems that the only real difference is military chamber specs being more generous to allow chambering dirty rounds.
There are 2 bodies that determines these specifications for civilian use; SAAMI and CIP. Both treat .308Win and 7.62x51 as the same.
