We have on a few occasions, placed a cage type trap at our bait stations from which we attract and shoot pigs.
This trap cage measures about 2200 long x 900 x900mm,made with a foot plate closing a sliding gate.It is a simple metal frame closed with welded mesh.
Steps to follow to ensure success:
1] Must be set up at a bait at which the pigs are using.
2] Brush must be placed on sides and back of trap leaving only the entry point exposed.
3] The floor of the cage must be covered with soil, the pigs are reluctant to walk in on mesh.
4] Bait such as mielies must be in the form of a line leading into the trap and past the foot plate.
We have caught numerous pigs at one site, once 4 pigs on consecutive nights. While we actively hunt the bush pig,i have never had the heart to shoot one which has been trapped and have always released them.Take care if you do release a big pig and make sure you are in an unreachable position as they tend to be in a foul mood after a stint of captivity.
In the States they build a circular enclosure around a feeder and catch whole sounders at a time.I am convinced that this method would also be effective with bush pig.
