Though I would offer a different take (as per out off thread chat).

I like my animals to walk into frame, its almost like they say hello. When they walk out of frame they are saying goodbye. So I cropped the image to achieve this effect a little better. I also over applies some sharpening and increased the brightness to remove some of the shadows a little.

    Thanks Andrew. It looks good.
Here is another photo of the same bull. I have not edited it, what would you do with this one?

Ok, so for me taking the same approach I took on the previous picture the tight cropping does not work. Why? Well for me the subject is moving away from the camera so you want to create the concept of distance (moving away). Conversely in the previous pick you wanted nearness as the subject is coming towards you.

Cropping the picture differently gives you the idea the subject is moving away. Tell me what you think. You will be amazed at how good our concept of space is when you apply your mind a little.

So this one works for me. Remember it is highly personal but there are definite rules but which can be broken under certain conditions.

    BUM shot ...
All one really needs is SHARPNESS
    Just get your DOF correct
The animals face EYES must be sharp -- and have a little "catchlight" in them
    That is the technical

    For the "Art"
I like the photo to illustrate the animal as much as possible naturally in it's natural element ( surroundings / environment / habitat )

Photo clubs like to talk about the -- elements of three ( thirds )

Your light is more important -- early morning and late afternoon -- the "magic moment"

Photo is fine -- this is not a photo-competition ...

What is your protocol / policy with regards to trophy animals ?
Do you leave them to sire the next generation ?

What are the decisions that are made -- in terms of // Shoot - Leave ?
