A young mans firsts.
The young man achieved another first on Saturday, two warthog at same sitting, very pleased with himself and a big change came over him afterwards.
A farmer called me to say there were 5 hogs coming into the fenced lands, they had figured a way to get under the tires. So Friday night was a rush pack, call a helper in and head out to farm.
Farmer said we could not come even onto farm and the pigs would run, he had parked far off and just wasted his time, they were very awake.
I figured we would try come in from behind 12 km away, park behind mountain and walk in about 2 km to cultivated lands. On way too lands I stopped at one of the other "good spots and Cody I took a walk down to check the better spots out, just in case. We were lucky enough to see two warthog move behind a thick bush cluster and be out of site, if we had looked 15 seconds later we would not have seen them and not have known they were there. They went behind bush and just stayed out of sight.
A relatively easy stalk to next closest bush gave us a 100-120 m shot after rotating around bush to get view of the hogs. There we sat and tried to get a shot, but the thorn scrub was just showing the back of the pig last 2 inches of body and head away. We sat for ever, they stayed tail to us head away and not coming out. After a while I noticed the larger pig would stop every now and again and do something I had never seen before, raise its head up higher and look over the scrub to survey surroundings. I asked Cody how he felt about a head shot and he turned it down, saying he had not practiced enough. We waited the head would come up look around go down repeat, but no shot. I mentally shot the pig over and over again.
The hog then turned to left for the first time and lifted its head looking away from us and bang it dropped. I looked at Cody and saw he was nervous or apprehensive, “just like you said dad behind the head and out nose". Told Cody to keep still quiet and we looked for second pig only to see it heading towards us. I whispered to Cody to keep it in his scope and wait for it to stop. The hog stopped turned away and ran off, only to stop again 40/50 m pass the first now dead hog.
The rifle surprised me and the pig buckled ran and was out of site. We found it a few minutes later (the little bugger took a head shot again and just got lucky)
We spoke about the head shot and he explained that he had been on the hogs head for "hours dad" and when it turned away like that it was just like the target, aim a bit low and if you hit low it was dead and if you hit 4 fingers high like at 100 m practice it was still dead. "Easy dad"
We will talk again about head shots, but he has already said he is not going to shoot head shots again.
I will leave it for now, he is very proud of self at mo.
Now he just wants to practice, practice - 200 round .22 Saturday night practice. Sunday 20 round practice at 540 m gong.

Re: A young mans firsts.
We tried the lands twice there after, evening and early morning, but no warthog. I believe these two may have been part of the 5 group because we surprised 3 pigs on way back after fetching vehicle in the same spot. 5 pigs total ? I recon likely same pod on way to lands.
we did a predicted line of travel and helper got one by ambush.
Will hear from farmer what happens in lands after this.
AND ! - these were Cody's first animals with the 7mm 08.
