I think it is pretty much irrelevant which calibre one uses. The terrible trajectory duet the low speed makes it difficult to use under these circumstances. The subsonic pistol may work good out to 15 meters, but this application is too far out for regular use.

Dr. Tertius Bergh, a seasoned veterinarian working in the field of meat safety for many years with a wide expertise in meat regulations, training of inspectors and abattoir approvals
had a vision of closing the gap that existed in the game industry by rather bringing the abattoir to the animals if game animals could not be brought to the abattoir.
With the harvesting of game for the export market where the carcass is partially dressed in the veld, it was proven that a method of killing the animal in the veld can still produce a highly safe and clean product even to satisfy the EU export market. The requirement that a live animal has to enter the abattoir alive has been proven null and void. The same fallacy that trophy meat was considered of inferior quality and thus unacceptable for supply to the market was proven, with scientific studies, to be inaccurate.

The dilemma, however, was that we still had to transport the carcass to an approved facility to complete the slaughter and inspect the final carcass.

    During the process of harvesting for the export market, the following had to be done;

    1) Register the farm to evaluate the residue and disease control risk as well as establishing an effective traceable system.
    2) Register the harvesting team to ensure competent slaughter personnel that are healthy and have a partially acceptable slaughter procedure in the veld as well as partial meat inspection.
    3) Have an approved slaughter facility (abattoir) to complete the slaughter and fulfil the requirements of the law e.g. approved facility and final meat inspection.
    4) Have an approved deboning/processing facility to finish the product to customer requirements.
    5) Should the above be adopted for quality local meat supply it seems that 1,2, and 4 will not be a problem but the pothole always was no. 3, the facility with meat inspection.

Game farms that wish to sell large volumes of meat commercially should ensure that each animal is shot either in the head or neck to ensure instant death.

The carcass must immediately be bled out properly at the scene. Vehicles for transporting game carcasses from the field to an on-farm processing facility should also be suitably equipped to allow for continued bleeding out during the drive.

What did our forefathers use ?
What velocity did one get with a black powder voorlaaier shooting lead slugs / balls ?

What about a large calibre long straight wall case in a rifle using cast lead Minnie "ball"
    Hollow base and hollow point

Should be subsonic and useable out to 50m
Lead Minnie will expand once one gets the lead alloy mixture correct

    45-70 Govt (Springfield )

One could even use a single shot falling block

    There is a modern equivalent

The new Power Max Bonded load pushes a 160-grain bullet at 2,225 fps; while the sub-sonic Super Suppressed 265-grain load boogies along at only 1,060 fps.

Lots of room for those that want to experiment SUBSONIC -- but NOT an old .303 !

Becomes somewhat academic when ONLY head shots are allowed !

An old .303 can be converted to a fun subsonic rifle by fitting it with a barrel from a .44 Magnum Thompson Contender. Case rim diameter is near as makes no difference and you can launch a large heavy bullet at subsonic velocities. Hornady XTP 300gr will apparently even expand at subsonic velocities. Unfortunately one is still left with the rainbow trajectory.

Thank you I learn something new
I was thinking .410 barrel but no rifling so most you can do is slugs ?
( You can fire a .303 in there -- case just expands and bullet goes nowhere ( long ago youthful experimentation )
I wonder if you had a single barrel and ran a button down it ?

Feedback: the owners agreed to the use of regular suppressed rifles.
