I thought I would gve this a bash this season and here is the process I'm following:

  1. Flesh out the skin – either fleshing knife & beam or high pressure hose
  2. Salt the hide or freeze the hide - can store now if needs be until ready to proceed
  3. Soak the skin (if salted) and squeeze the hide max 2 hours until soft
  4. Pickle the skin – salt, water, white vinegar (2 litres water, 2 litres vinegar, 1kg salt), need about 18 litres of solution – for 3 days stirring frequently
  5. Neutralise the skin – 2 cup baking soda to 18 litres water for 40 minutes
  6. Rinse in clean water & dish soap and the rinse clean water and towel dry
  7. Oil the skin – equal parts neats foot oil (100g) and warm water (100g) + ammonia (28g) – apply in 2 coats about 1 hour apart
  8. Cover in plastic sheet overnight to “cure”
  9. Stretch – over wooden beam to soften

Any input or tips that would be useful? Where does one buy ammonia from?
