Question Black Rhino in the Karoo ?

Apparently according to historical sources these animals did once occur naturally in the Karoo

Is there anyone currently farming / breeding black rhino in the Karoo

I would think that there are still places -- perhaps mostly the Eastern Cape Karoo where suitable habitat still occurs ?

From a reading of the multiple hunting lodges / safari operations in this area it would appear that none of these operations currently advertise black rhino as a resident species ?

Any reasons this should be so ?

There are Black Rhino in the Karoo. Seen them as recent as March before lock down.

But you don't go around advertising that you have a stash of gold sitting in your yard now do you?

There are Black Rhino in Karoo National Park as well. Even listed on Sanparks site. (https://www.sanparks.org/parks/karoo...ff/mammals.php)
But that doesn't count as breeding / farming.

    Thanks for the info
I vaguely remember something of a big media event in connection with this ?

    OK
So that confirms that they can be introduced into this area ( where habitat is suitable )

I wonder about the no or small uptake by private game farms / ranches ?

There are quite a few places in the Karoo with Black Rhino.
The consensus is generally that White Rhino needs feed in those areas where as the Black Rhino manages due to the Browser aspect
A roaring Lion kills no game

Yep, I've seen Black Rhino in the (Eastern Cape) Karoo.

I was surprised to learn a few years back of a farmer breeding Hippo in the Karoo near Colesburg. He claimed that they did occur there historically but I never researched it any further.

Hippo did occur in that area. There is even a river called the Seekoei river, it is a tributary of the Orange river.
