Duracell debate
Some advice please.
I recently purchased a 10 pack of Duracell AAA batteries.(1.5V)
Expiry date on packaging 2029.
...so far so good.
I replaced my torch batteries, but light was still dim, so decided to test the batteries.
Out of the 10 batteries tested, none measured above 0.48volts.
On average 0.39 - 0.42 volts.???
Brand new batteries measured with a decent volt meter....
Now I’m no electrical engineer, but am I missing something here.
Surely a 1.5V battery must measure at least 1.5V when new??
Is this worth taking up with Duracell?

Re: Duracell debate
At least test this with another multimeter too

Re: Duracell debate
Maybe do 2 or 3 packs to validate claims then you have a solid case and they can't fault a defect pack or batch.

Re: Duracell debate
If the light is dim but still shining, then I seriously doubt that the batteries were below 0,5V. A typical LED runs on 3,7V. If it takes 3 AAA cells, then it should stop working when they reach 1,2V average. So I do suspect your meter to be somewhat off. This is especially hard to detect with digital meters, but even the older analogue meters can get damaged through pretty normal use and transport. Some meters also have a battery that can run down and affect the readings.

Re: Duracell debate
Don't use Duracell, they leak.
A fellow club member brought this to our attention. He lost electronics due to leaking Duracell batteries. I almost lost my Led lenser to leaking Duracell batteries and all the batteries i have used since of their have started to leak. The Duracell made in Ireland seem to be the worst.
Be careful and check them regularly. I have moved over to energiser and they seem to last longer and best of all. They don't leak so far.

That voltage sounds seriously suspect. Can you test your meter on another source eg your car battery? You did put your meter on DC volts? Is your leads still intact, to test it put your meter on ohm's and short the 2 leads out? It is supposed to show less than 2 ohm. NB don't forget to take your meter of the ohm setting before measuring voltage again as that might/will damage your meter. Normally a new battery will measure about 1.6V or more. To realy measure the correct state of a battery you must actually put a bit of a small load on it and then see what the voltage drop is.

Re: Duracell debate
Also, confirm your meter has a new /decent battery.
