    Default Spyderco Efficient

Need some advice on a purchase.

I have a budget of around 1.3k, which could possibly be pushed to 1.5k. Looking for an edc knife. It will not be for any specialised purpose but rather for general use. I am using a CRKT Drifter for the last two years and it was my first and is still running well. I just want to expand now 😁

I have seen the Spyderco Efficient as well as the Tenacious which is in budget and seem to be good knives at their level. The Efficient seems slightly smaller, and not being the biggest oke, i was leaning towards that. However, searching the forum i cant seem to pick up anything on it, unless my searching skills are failing. I have seen though that the Tenacious has been recommended.

So, does anyone carry the Efficient? Do you guys suggest the Tenacious over the Efficient? Lastly, any other recommendations within the budget?

    Thanks. Stay safe.

I carry a couple of Endura's and I don't think you can go wrong with a Spyderco but beware of fake knockoffs, they are very difficult to spot for a "normal" person. You can have a look on knifeguy.co.za his prices and service are very good.

Thanks Vaal. Was actually comparing prices at theknifeguy and sharp edge, so on the right track it seems.

I carry a Spyderco Delica everyday for a few years now. It is my favourite knife. It's small and light.

When I go somewhere where I expect to use my knife for some tougher jobs, I will rather take my Cold Steel Voyager large as I don't feel as sorry for that knife. And it's built like a tank. The spydie is a nicer knife and holds an edge better imo.

Couple years back I wanted to buy a Tenacious as my go to hard use knife. Back then they sold for like R600 but I never found one in a shop and didn't really go out of my way to find one. I really regret not buying it then. You will not regret buying a Spydie. I just can't believe how expensive they became.....

Thanks for the feedback. Also noticed prices from older threads and how it has increased!

MoS, buying a knife could be as easy as simply walking into the local hardware store and buying the first sharpened piece of steel you can lay eyes and hands on. The results will be similar: something which might or might not be able to do the job.

Some ideas to ponder: what do you do with your current edc knife? The odd box or two at the office, or maybe a piece of biltong during lunch break? In that case a full flat grind on a small 6cm blade of a gentleman's folder would be enough.

Or, maybe your work requires something sturdy and tough, which will get beaten up and maltreated in the best sense of the word. Then get yourself an Enlan knife and replace it after a year.

Or maybe you fit very nicely into some yuppie cliche, where only the best and priciest is good enough?

My general advice is to get a large knife - as large as you can carry. Simply because a large knife can do a small knife's task, but not vice versa. My EDC folder is a Spyderco Resilience. Truly large, but I will not change it soon. It can easily handle any task at hand: from slaughtering animals, to kitchen utilities, to cleaning nails and removing burnt etiquettes from my daughter's shirts.

Look at the type of steel. Chrome-moly steels are hard to beat for average work. They sharpen easily and keep an edge sufficiently. I touch mine up daily, and sharpen it once or twice a month.

Get something which works with your dressing style. I prefer loose fitting, yet sturdy clothes and therefore have ample space in my jeans' pockets. If you work in formal dress, a thin and slick folder along the lines of the CRKT Kiss could prove to be a winner.

Please do some research on knife steel? If you can sharpen yourself, it helps a lot.

I used to carry a CRKT M21-02 for four or six years, and only retired it after I had sharpened down the cutting edge.

Some companies with a good reputation to keep in mind: Buck, Kershaw, Cold Steel, CRKT.

DsJ, it will be for the odd box, biltong and other tasks where it could be useful. Not required for work or any industrial purpose.

Hope i don't fit into any yuppie cliche, and don't think i do for wanting a, or another, edc knife. If best and most expensive was the idea, and within my reach, a few other names i would have asked about.

Recently bought my first edc torch and am just looking to add another, perhaps "better" knife. See where that goes and maybe another could follow in future. But the request for advice was so that i am informed and it is not just a purchase entirely for the sake of it, but is good value. Also always just wanted a Spyderco, so again wanted to check as it is driven by heart and want, more than need.

Get the point about it being relative and will give that some thought.

Have read the online reviews but i value the practical views shared on this forum.

Hope this does not come across defensive, it is not. I asked about other suggestions and your response is the sort of practical thing i mentioned and look for.

Dont let the ds talk shit in your ears.
With Spyderco you usually get better steel and heat treat and it will hold an edge much longer.

I would spend a bit more and get the VG-10 Endela if I was just buying one.

I would really like the Spyderco Native S30V but even at R2300 it is too much for me. I'd rather carry a Leatherman, Mora or Opinel.

You could also either spend a bit more and get an Endura/Delica or spend less and look at a Honey Badger, preferably in D2.
