Re: FARM HOMESTEAD SECURITY
A lot of the old folks still live in a world of it won't happen to me.
The amount of farms I saw with no security, doors left open, inviting strangers in for a cup of coffee. Buyers of produce allowed into the first layer of security. They still live in the times of old hospitality and a hand shake.
It's very difficult to change that mindset.

Re: FARM HOMESTEAD SECURITY
Why hasn't private security filled the void left by the kommandos? Or would the Kommandos been have out of depth in terms of the frequency of farm attacks these days?
I know even in our suburbs, just to get everyone to switch to ONE security provider so we could have a dedicated vehicle was a mission.
I'm not saying farmers are all millionaires, on the contrary I believe it to be a VERY hard job, with little appreciation. But the amount of RSA guys doing security work
all over Africa and the middle east makes me wonder if one even needs government buy in. I rate ALOT of people would contribute towards keeping our farmers safe, both domestically and internationally.

Re: FARM HOMESTEAD SECURITY
I think the issue is much more complex than just replacing the commandos with private security. The commando members were the farmers themselves and they were supported (armed, equipped, trained) by the gubbermunt. They usually developed good intelligence capabilities and knew that their own livelyhoods were at stake. Something private security can probably never do, exept maybe if get highly-paid pros, which most farmers just can't afford. Another issue is reaction times in rural areas. Any outside help will take ages to arrive when seconds matter. This means that only the people at the scene can actually give immediate assistance. The rest can at best block roads and contaminate the scene. The fact of the matter is that the victims are on their own and need to prepare accordingly. Many people lament the demise of the commandos, demand their resurrection, demand the return of the death penalty etc. etc. None of this will help. Get your mindset right and prepare to deal with the matter yourself.

Re: FARM HOMESTEAD SECURITY
South African farmers are now where the Rhodesian farmers were in the mid-70's... just without a defence force on their side.

Re: FARM HOMESTEAD SECURITY
Some of the best advice and most realistic answers on the various issues always brought up by people not directly involved. I have 1st hand experience of the points in bold.
Private security on farms are not as effective as people think. Friends of ours farm with fruit in the Magalies mountains. Some of the partners are mega farmers in Limpopo so they do have security. Our company also own a farm near Lydenburg, also with security and patrols. Both had incidents of theft in the last few weeks. Yes no person as attacked, but perhaps these are just precursors to more serious crimes.

Re: FARM HOMESTEAD SECURITY
Very difficult mindset to change indeed, my old man reckons he'll be able to take them on. Doesn't want any security gates or anything. Just needs his rollie then he's rambo - despite the amount of times I've caught them and the dogs out sleeping in front of the tv n their house at night.
You need everyone's buy-in on the safety plan. Farmworkers need to know that if anything happens to the boss they are out of a job, the maid needs to know that the gate doesn't get opened for anyone, not even a nice old white oomie. Family members need to know what the plan is when SHTF and need to understand why the plan is there. Without buy-in you can have all the fancy security but negligence will catch you..

Re: FARM HOMESTEAD SECURITY
The sad part to this is that 90% of the time information is fed from the inside.
And as sum1 said if u rely on outside help ie security companies. It may jus be too late when they pitch up.
Hence the saying "love thy neighbor" lol
